My truck is on a lift gettin a bung welded in for my lc1. I noticed some oil on my starter. Has anybody else had an oil leak in this area?

My oil filter has leaked a couple times and many others have reported a similar leak from the oil filter as well.

Here is a pic. It is on the other side of the jeep on top of the starter. We used a camera to look everywhere and could not find out where it is coming from. There is a little around the dust shield/bellhousing driver side bottom bolt but that looks like it is coming from where ever the leak is above the starter. We inspected the whole valve cover gasket and it is dry. There is no oil around the knock sensor. There is something above the starter below the headers that we can not see. Does anybody have a scematic of the motor?
I can't get the picture to post give me a minute to resize.

thought there was a thread about improper oil filters being used, causing a leak.

Jumping in late on this thread, but my oil filter is leaking. Checked the service sheet and they used the right filter. Had it serviced in August, and days after that it leaked. Went back in August and they cleaned it up and said they could not find a leak, was probably residual oil. Months went by no drips in garage until now. Went under the jeep and discovered the drips are from the filter, and the filter was not tight, so I tighten it. Days later starts leaking again--really slowly, but leaking. Worth going back for another service or is this normal? Doesn't seem normal and I don't want to over tighten the filter.

I don't know if it's the filters or the design of the filter housing, but mine has had 3 leaks in one year. Each time it's just small drips from the filter area and each time they change the filter it gets fixed....only to return eventually.

You might want to remove the filter and make sure it's not double gasketed. Sometimes the rubber seal from the filter gets stuck to the engine and the new filter won't seal properly.
Also check to see if where the oil filter mounts is part of the block or a separate part. If it's separate then it will have an o-ring or gasket between it and the block that could be leaking.

tell the dealer straight up they didn't put it on tight and you had to tighten it yourself, I've done that at 2 dealers and both had a pissed off look on their faces like they were going to go rip the tech in the shops head off after I left :p

I don't want a bad service, so if they aren't going to tighten a filter on properly, that shouldn't be my problem, I don't need my engine to blow because of their mistake.

I tightened the last one up good and tight (i'm a pretty big guy) and had no problems with it again after. I don't care if it's more work for them to pull off at the next oil change. I know the filter won't come off if I tighten it right.

I've gone back once already, they said nothing was wrong and theoretically tightened it. But now it's leaking again. I tightened it, was kind of loose, leak slowed but is still leaking.

At this point, just wondering if there's a flaw in the oil filter or where the gasket meets the filter housing.

And I'm not sure I trust the techs. Frankly doesn't seem like they really care that much and the less they touch my rig the better...call me paranoid but I've had my share of rim rash, dings, and mystery damage from careless techs on other cars.

Oil leak

Good morning,
Just wanted to say that I am going through the same thing right now. Last weekend I had the oil changed at the dealer like I always do. Got home and there was oil splashed up everywhere under the car dripping from several places. I went back immediately and the tech said, "my bad, the leak was coming from the filter and the o-ring was bad. I fixed it and it won't leak anymore." This past Friday I was driving to home and smelled burning oil. Got home to take a look and yup, more oil everywhere. However, my oil level was fine. I took it back yesterday and they said the filter had to be replaced and everything should be fine now. I told them to run it for a little bit to make sure. Thats when the service manager came out to speak to me and he said he hasn't seen anything like this in a loooong time but there is a crack in the oil filter housing and the housing needs to be replaced. Hmmmm....I don't know how much work is involved to replace the housing and what exactly could have caused a crack like that. Design flaw or over-tightening of the filter by the service tech? I will keep you posted on whether or not they fixed the problem as soon as soon as I get my car back. Right now they have me driving around the worlds most basic trashed out jeep compass. :indifferent:

Dang Paige! That's terrible. Hopefully they get your out of that Compass back in your Jeep soon. I wonder how the oil filter housing got cracked. Did they say how long it was going to take to replace it?

My only thought is they over tightened it but I dont know if that would cause it to crack. Parts are supposed to be in tomorrow so hopefully it will be ready then. Not holding my breath but still hoping. I cant stand the compass anymore. Not all jeeps are created equal. Lol
PS. We've had 2 hailstorms in the past 2 days and they have my jeep parked outside....

Just had my second oil change. Couple hours after I parked, I notice oil dripping again. Really!?! Crawled under the rig and it's dripping from the filter...again. Cleaned it up, tightened the filter a bit--will wait and see. I've already been back to the dealership twice when I had my oil changed the first time, only to have them tell me nothing is wrong, filter is tight. Really annoying!
