Help - HID ballasts have a constant loud buzz...

I bought an HID kit and tried to install it. When I received the kit I saw it didn't come with a capacitor, relay, fuse, or even a resistor, so I had a hunch it wouldn't work.

Yeah...didn't work, not even turn on and flicker. So I contacted the company/person and wanted to return them. We went back and forth on trying to get them work and he wanted to sell me another wiring 'harness' that had a capacitor, fuse and relay on it, or an inline resistor. I opted for the capacitor harness, he then stated the resistor would be better, cheaper and easier to install. We went back and forth some more before he told me to try turning the plugs around and plugging them in backwards, perhaps the polarity is different. So I tried this, now the lights turn on, but the ballast makes a constant loud buzzing noise, whether the lights are on or off, the Jeep on or off, the buzz is always there. It's not the high pitched noise the bulbs make when you first turn them on while they warm up (although it also makes this noise too). It's a constant loud buzzing noise from the ballasts. Needless to say I unplugged them as I don't want to come out to a pile of ashes where my Jeep use to be.

Anyone have any suggestions or help?

I bought the kit from V-LEDS. It's actually a pretty nice kit, except it doesn't work with my Jeep. :(

When I questioned him more about wanting the harness with the capacitor and fuse he said it would be more complicated to install compared to the resistor. Which confused me considering it should just be plug and play like the kit itself. But then he never answered me about that, he just told me to plug things in backwards and see if that works. Which it did...kind of.

My question is would a harness even work/fix the problem considering the polarity is backwards? I'm assuming it would fix the buzzing the ballast is making, or is this caused by it being plugged in backwards? Also, what's a canceller kit? I haven't heard of this before...

Thanks for the help!

I bought a kit that had the wrong polarity I had to file off the nub on the back of the plug so that I could connect it to the female side reversed. But you will also need a relay switch for the low and high beams. You don't need a relay switch for the fog lights.

Just spoke to him again and he said that he's in contact with the manufacturer of the kit to see what might be the problem. He says that he has a friend with the same kind of car so if all else fails he would install a kit on his friend's car and try to figure out how to fix it.

So hopefully he can figure something out! He said he should have an answer tonight so he'd email me tomorrow and let me know. And if nothing can fix it, he'll refund my money to me.

Usually when you hear a ballast making a buzzing sound it is an indicator that the ballast is going bad. At least this is for regular lighting applications so I would imagine it would be the same for auto applications. Example: I hear a buzzing sound in my warehouse on one of the lights. Most likely it is a bad ballast (actually all the time it is)

However, I would try the setup with a relay correctly in place and then if it is still buzzing you have narrowed down the issue to equipment.

Hello,

You do not need a relay or capacitor on your vehicle. You just need a proper relay harness when installing a kit on the low beams.

I am not familiar with the kit that you purchased but I do know that we test samples on a regular basis and depending on the quality/design of the ballast, some ballasts are considerably louder than others.

LOL I actually have a place I usually get my HIDs from (had them in my last two vehicles and currently in our Charger R/T). I was going to order from them, but since I ordered reverse LEDs from this other place and saw they had HID kits...against my better judgement I ordered a kit from him.

He's been very helpful, and nice during the entire mess, so I have nothing bad to say about him or the kit...the Jeep just didn't play well with it.

Now I have to wait even longer to get my HIDs though!! :(

I know I know...:boohoo:

Thanks Steve! I'm actually just returning the kit to the guy though, my guess he couldn't figure out a fix for the constant loud buzz coming from the ballast, so he told me to ship it to him and I'd get my money back. But if I come across anymore hassles or problems...I'll remember you said that. :D
